Who is Fred?

Our company was named after Fred.  Fred actually is a little cartoon guy our founder, Peter Apel, has been drawing (more like "doodling") since junior high school.  Fred's most common appearance through the years has been as a baseball player, though he has made appearances on various personal greeting cards and has shown up in such forms as a drummer, a graduate, and a cowboy.  He almost always is seen with his arms straight out to the sides, since our founder doesn't know how to draw him other ways.

  "I love bananas.
I love them, yum, yum, yum.
   I love bananas.
   They've got fiber and potassium!"
- Fred Pinsocket, Spaceman
With Peter Apel's debut album, "
I've Got a Dinosaur on My Head!" Fred finally was given a microphone, a space piano and a new spaceman outfit and made it onto track 11 as a little spaceman that sings about his favorite food.  You can also hear brief guest appearances by Fred in "Sometimes I Have Oatmeal for Breakfast" and "Walking in a Circle" ( learn about the other 11 songs here ).

There you have the inside scoop. Oh. Fred's last name?  Way back when our mascot only had a first name, our founder worked diligently in a summer job building printed circuit boards, where many of the sensitive ICs had to be plugged into various sizes of pre-soldered sockets; 10-pin sockets, 18-pin sockets, etc. "Hey! That sounds like someone's last name!" Poof. Fred Pinsocket was born.

Listen below to Fred singing with Peter Apel in this "I Love Bananas"
song clip from the I've Got a Dinosaur on My Head! music CD!
